11/09/2006 - San Francisco, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The San Francisco 49ers may be relocating to the city of Santa Clara.
The team announced that it will shift its efforts to build a new stadium from San Francisco to Santa Clara after deciding to not go forward with the public approval process to undertake the project at Candlestick Point.
The 49ers, their development partner, Lennar Corporation, and San Francisco officials had been studying over the last year to see if Candlestick Point could support a new stadium.
The 49ers' headquarters and training facility are currently located in Santa Clara. The team currently plays its home games at Monster Park, which was built in 1958 and was originally named Candlestick Park. It was renamed 3Com Park in 1995 before again changing names in 2005.
"We hired the best experts and advisors in the business and worked tirelessly with the city and Lennar to move forward with this project at Candlestick Point," said team owner John York. "I want to commend Mayor Newsom and his staff and Lennar for their support and determination over the past year in this enormous undertaking. This decision is not a reflection of their efforts, but rather the geographic challenges of this site."
According to a release by the club, a variety of challenges factored into the decision, including geographic boundaries and limited and deteriorating road access that would have been overwhelmed by the new stadium.
Also, the mixed-use development, including 6,500 new housing units, would have required the building of a massive multi-level parking garage which would have eliminated the surface lots currently used by fans.
"We know that's counter-intuitive for a public-transit-first city like San Francisco," said York. "Not only would this have snarled traffic as fans tried to enter and exit en masse, it would have also severely limited the fans' ability to tailgate, which is a popular local tradition."
"Even with a garage of this size, many fans would still have had to park in satellite lots and be shuttled to the stadium. The conditions for fans at Candlestick Point would have been further exacerbated by the demolition of Monster Park and the gradual piecing together of the mixed-use development, placing fans in a construction zone for a decade."
Finally, the team remains committed to opening the new stadium by 2012, something that may have not been possible given the complexity of the approval process.
The team will now look to the area in Santa Clara near the Great America amusement park and the Santa Clara Convention Center.
According to the team, this area already contains plenty of existing parking, several six-to-eight-lane thoroughfares that can handle high traffic and plenty of public transportation.
York did stress in a letter to fans that the club will not leave the San Francisco Bay area, nor will it change its name, regardless of where the stadium is located. It will also continue to use the design of the interior of the stadium shown to the public in the summer.
Next for the team will be a preliminary evaluation in Santa Clara and meetings with officials in the city to develop goals for the project. If the new stadium cannot be built in Santa Clara, the team will continue to look for a location within the Bay Area.
"The 49ers have called the Bay Area home for our entire 60 year history. We are a part of the fabric of this region, and we intend to stay right here where we belong," York said.

The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.
Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.
The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East.
