07/11/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Right-handed surprise Armando Galarraga goes for a ninth start without a loss tonight when the Detroit Tigers host the Minnesota Twins in game two of a four-game matchup between the American League Central Division's second- and third-place teams at Comerica Park.

The 25-year-old, who'd entered the season with just three major-league appearances and no victories, was 3-2 after a 9-4 loss to the Twins in Detroit on May 23.

He's not lost since, going 4-0 with four no-decisions in eight starts, including a second matchup with Minnesota on June 30 at the Metrodome.

In that game, a 5-4 Tigers win, Galarraga scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs in six innings but wound up with a no-decision.

He's 2-1 in six home starts this year with a 4.41 earned run average.

For Minnesota, southpaw Glen Perkins will be looking for a fourth straight victory.

A veteran of 23 big-league appearances before 2008, Perkins split his initial four decisions this season before beginning a seven start unbeaten streak in early June. He's 3-0 with four no-decisions in that run, including a no- decision in the June 30 matchup with Galarraga, in which he allowed seven hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

He defeated the Tigers on May 25 in Detroit after allowing seven hits and a run in 7 2//3 innings of Minnesota's 6-1 win.

On Thursday, Justin Morneau capped his five-hit day with the go-ahead home run in the top of the 11th for Minnesota, which edged Detroit, 7-6.

The Twins trailed by two in the top of the ninth, but took advantage of a fielding error to force extra innings.

Nick Punto singled off of Todd Jones to begin the frame, and came home to score on a Denard Span single one batter later. Span's single went through the legs of right fielder Matt Joyce and all the way to the right field wall, plating Punto and allowing Span to reach third with no outs.

Pinch-hitter Joe Mauer followed with a sacrifice fly down the left field line to drive in Span and tie the game at 6-6, as Jones blew his second save.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Joe Nathan got both Jeff Larish and Ivan Rodriguez to strike out swinging.

After a scoreless 10th, Morneau came up with one out in the 11th and blasted Freddy Dolsi's pitch over the wall in right for the lead. Matt Guerrier (5-4) worked around a Joyce double in the home half to finish the game and earn the win for the Twins, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Guerrier threw the final two innings for Minnesota, and was the last of five Twins relievers who didn't give up a run following Kevin Slowey's rough start. Slowey went just 3 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on nine hits with a pair of walks, and just one strikeout.

Morneau had his second career five-hit day, and along with the homer hit two doubles and walked once. Span finished 4-for-4 with a triple, and Punto had three hits.

Dolsi (1-3) took the loss despite a solid relief outing, as he threw 2 1/3 innings and allowed just the one run on two hits. Kenny Rogers scattered nine hits and two walks over seven innings, allowing three runs with one strikeout for the Tigers, who had won three in a row.

Larish was 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Marcus Thames went 3-for-4 and Joyce homered.

The Twins have won eight of their 12 contests with the Tigers this season.

MySportsbook.com Posts Heisman Trophy Odds

With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.

Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season.  Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.

This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy.  A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.

FOOTBALL BETTING : Cassel Signs Contract

Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.

NFL Betting
After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
The signing will come as welcome news to Cassel's new coaches and teammates. Amiable and hardworking, online football betting he appeared to win over everyone at minicamp.
"I think he's got some unique leadership qualities. I think his teammates like him and have respect for him. I think he's doing a pretty good job on the field, too," Haley said last month. "He's doing everything that I'm asking him, that our coaches are asking him to do. I don't have one single complaint how he's carrying himself."
After one workout, wide receiver Devard Darling declared Cassel "a breath of fresh air."
"He has a lot of swagger, a lot of confidence. It's good for us," said Darling. "We trust in him that he's going to go out there and lead us all the way."
nse to accommodate his specific abilities.
Trapped on the bench behind Heisman winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC and then unable to unseat Super Bowl MVP Brady at New England, Cassel seemed destined to be a backup all his life. As Brady was helped off the field last September, Cassel seized the opportunity he'd been waiting for since high school.
In his only sustained action since his teens, he hit 349 of 555 passes for 3,949 yards at New England. He had 23 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions as the Patriots, who had gone unbeaten through the regular season the year before, finished 11-5 and out of the playoffs.
Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."
