Espanyol lets go of manager Marquez

12/01/2008 - Barcelona, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Espanyol have sacked coach Bartolome Marquez after a 1-0 loss to Sporting Gijon left the club facing a relegation battle at the wrong end of the La Liga table.

Marquez's side have won just three of their 13 league games this season, with a defeat at home to Sporting proving to be the final straw for the Barcelona club's board.

A statement on the club's official website confirmed: "Espanyol's delegate commission, which also included sporting director Francisco Herrera, took the decision to dismiss Bartolome Marquez.

"The team's training session on Monday will be led by assistant coach Oscar Perarnau. We hope nevertheless that Marquez will stop by beforehand to say goodbye to the players.

"Paco Herrera insisted that the club will allow themselves 48 hours to determine who will be Marquez's replacement on the bench."
