Hunter solid in season debut as Texas downs Tampa

06/05/2010 - Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tommy Hunter was sensational in his season debut, hurling a complete game to lead Texas past Tampa Bay, 6-1, in the second of a three-game set at Rangers Ballpark.

Hunter (1-0) allowed five hits, did not issue and walk and fanned four in leading the Rangers to a second straight win in the series and their fourth win in their last five games overall.

Josh Hamilton homered for a second straight game and Elvis Andrus had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs for Texas, which has won seven of the last eight meetings in Arlington against the Rays since the start of last season.

James Shields (5-4) suffered the loss for the Rays after allowing all six runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits while walking one and striking out four.

Sean Rodriguez accounted for the visitors' lone run with a home run, as the Rays suffered just their second series defeat in 10 road sets this season.

Andrus led off the home first with a double, moved to third base on a Michael Young ground out and scored on an Evan Longoria fielding error. Hamilton then belted a two-out, two-run homer to right-center field to make it a 3-0 game.

Hank Blalock doubled with one out in the second inning but was thrown out trying to steal third before Rodriguez followed with his longball to right- center to trim the Rangers' lead to 3-1.

The Rangers restored a three-run cushion in the bottom of the frame when Justin Smoak scored on an Andrus ground out.

Hunter stranded Longoria at third with one out in the fourth when Carlos Pena struck out and Blalock popped up and left B.J. Upton at third with two outs in the fifth by getting John Jaso to ground out.

Texas increased its lead in the sixth on a squeeze bunt by Julio Borbon that scored David Murphy and a triple by Andrus that delivered Max Ramirez.

Hunter retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth innings and stranded a runner in the ninth to close his performance.
