Surprising Shockers continue fast start against Wyoming

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

12/09/2006 - Casper, WY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 10th-ranked Wichita State Shockers have earned their highest spot in the national poll since 1980-81, and they will attempt to avoid an upset in today's non-conference meeting with Wyoming.

The Shockers are a perfect 6-0 thus far, including victories over half of the teams that reached the Final Four last season. They have had a full week to prepare for today's clash, as their most recent outing took place last Saturday and resulted in a 64-61 decision over Syracuse on the road. No opponent has scored more than 66 points against Wichita State, which takes great pride in its strong defensive play.

As for Wyoming, which is off to its best start since the 2000-01 campaign, it improved to 7-1 on Wednesday with a 91-59 thrashing of Denver in the 142nd meeting between the rivals. The Cowboys have now won four straight games since their only loss of the season, a 21-point road thrashing at the hands of the UAB Blazers. Still, they haven't beaten a ranked opponent since 2002.

Wichita State has won eight of 11 all-time meetings with Wyoming.

Four players are scoring in double figures for Wichita State, which is posting 70.8 ppg while limiting the opposition to 57.7 ppg. Kyle Wilson leads the pack with 13.2 ppg, and Sean Ogirri checks in with 12.8 ppg. Ryan Martin is posting 10.7 ppg, and P.J. Couisnard rounds out the foursome with 10.5 ppg. Wichita State only shot 39.3 percent from the floor against Syracuse last time out, but the club managed to limit the Orange to 36.1 percent efficiency from the field. The strong defense enabled the Shockers to overcome a 47-34 rebounding disadvantage, including 19-11 on the offensive glass. Wilson scored 17 points to lead the way in the win, and Ogirri pitched in 16 points from the backcourt.

Wyoming only led Denver by eight points at halftime on Wednesday, but a stellar effort over the final 20 minutes led to the lopsided final. The Cowboys connected on 63.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the second half, and they were able to limit the Pioneers to 34.6 percent shooting efficiency in the frame. Brad Jones was outstanding in the triumph, as he poured in 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Brandon Ewing showed off his all-around game by posting 20 points, six assists and six boards. A 39-29 rebounding advantage by Wyoming certainly helped the cause, as did a low total of seven turnovers. It is not surprise that Ewing put forth a big performance against Denver, as he entered that game averaging 22.7 ppg. Jones carried an average of 18.3 ppg into the tilt, and both players will get plenty of touches at the offensive end today.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
