Rare Mastroeni goal proves to be winner as Rapids top Revs

04/24/2010 - Foxborough, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Colorado Rapids earned a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Major League Soccer action on Saturday night.

Mehdi Ballouchy and Pablo Mastroeni scored their first respective goals of the season for the visitors on each side of the half to lead the club to its second straight league victory.

Ballouchy got things started for the Rapids on a counter attack after a chance by the Revolution at the other end. Goalkeeper Matt Pickens collected the ball and quickly threw an outlet to the midfield before the ball found Ballouchy in the offensive third. The midfielder then unleashed a long-range shot that skipped in the 18-yard box, past goalkeeper Preston Burpo to make it 1-0 just 14 minutes in.

The Revs equalized just four minutes later when newly signed Marco Parovic curled a perfectly placed free kick into the net with his left foot from about 25 yards out. It was the Serbian's first MLS goal.

Veteran midfielder destroyer Mastroeni scored just his fifth goal in 562 career MLS games in the 73rd minute, being set up by forward Conor Casey. Casey received the ball in the penalty area, held up until the defense drew toward him and laid off to Mastroeni, who unleashed a 35-yard laser into the back of the net for the game winner.

New England (2-3-0) will aim to rebound for its current two-game losing streak when it hosts FC Dallas next Saturday, while the Rapids (3-1-1) play at San Jose later the same night in their next MLS fixture.
